This project involved the careful restoration of a traditional cottage in Staffordshire, requiring a sensitive approach to preserve its historic character while improving structural integrity and long-term performance.


The property, typical of many older rural cottages, had suffered from age-related deterioration and inappropriate modern repairs, leading to moisture retention and material decay.

Like many historic buildings, the cottage faced a combination of issues that required specialist knowledge to resolve effectively:

 

  • Moisture retention and damp caused by non-breathable modern materials
  • Deteriorating structural timber elements
  • Degraded masonry and pointing, contributing to water ingress
  • Previous repairs using unsuitable materials, accelerating long-term damage

Our Approach

 

We adopted a conservation-led strategy, focusing on restoring the building using traditional materials and techniques that respect its original construction.

  • Repointing using lime mortar, restoring flexibility and moisture permeability
  • Careful repair and reinforcement of timber elements, retaining as much original material as possible
